Students at the Missouri School of Journalism will gain hands-on fact-checking experience through a new partnership between the Columbia Missourian and Gigafact, a nonprofit network that helps local news organizations respond to misinformation and online rumors. As part of the collaboration, students will produce what Gigafact calls Fact Briefs, Gigafact’s format for briefs that answer questions circulating in the community with clear, evidence-based reporting and links to supporting sources.

The initiative gives students practical experience identifying claims, verifying information and presenting their findings in a concise format designed for digital audiences. Gigafact provides participating newsrooms with training, editorial support and technology to help reporters investigate rumors and public confusion that spread online.

“This addition in Missouri is particularly interesting because students at one of the nation’s top journalism schools, the Missouri School of Journalism, will be publishing Fact Briefs as part of their curriculum,” said Gigafact founder and CEO Chandran Sankaran when announcing the partnership.
