Kevin J. Hales was recently selected to participate in the Rural Scholars Program at Tarleton State University in Texas. Hales is a visiting assistant professor of communication in the Department of Communication at the University of Missouri College of Arts and Science.

The Rural Scholars Program requires that recipients spend two years working on a research project with the Rural Communication Institute/Texas Social Media Research Institute at Tarleton.

Hales will research the lives of African American traditional farmers in the rural Gullah/Geechee Lowcountry states of South Carolina and Georgia through 2022. He will then collaborate with a group of rural West African village-based risiculture farmers in Gambia, Ghana and Nigeria in 2022 and 2023.
