University of Missouri Professor Denis McCarthy has received the Marlatt Mentorship Award from the Research Society on Alcohol (RSA). One of the organization’s highest honors, the peer-nominated award recognizes McCarthy’s lasting impact on the next generation of alcohol researchers.
McCarthy, who is also associate chair for research in Mizzou’s Department of Psychological Sciences in the College of Arts and Science, directs the Missouri Center for Addiction Research & Engagement’s multidisciplinary training program, supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). In this role, he has helped prepare alcohol researchers for impactful careers, mentoring more than 75 pre- and postdoctoral fellows for over 20 years.
For the past 10 years, McCarthy has served as director of the MU Alcohol Research Training Summer School, which brings undergraduate students to the campus to study alcohol research.
McCarthy’s mentees have gone on to successful careers in alcohol research, earning competitive training awards, securing major research grants, and becoming leaders in the field.
