The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) has recognized the University of Missouri Police Department (MUPD) with an Advanced Meritorious Law Enforcement Reaccreditation with Excellence. MUPD has been accredited with CALEA since March 2001.

“Safety is a top priority at the University of Missouri,” said MUPD Chief Brian Weimer. “That is evident not only by our continued accreditation, but through the collaboration among campus departments to promote safety year-round.”

Created in 1979 as a credentialing authority through joint efforts on law enforcement’s major executive associations, CALEA is considered the gold standard in public safety. The Law Enforcement Accreditation Program consists of two accreditations: Tier 1 is the Law Enforcement Accreditation, and Tier 2 is Advanced Law Enforcement Accreditation.

The Advanced Law Enforcement Accreditation process gives MUPD the opportunity to go beyond implementing best practices. It is specifically designed for elite organizations striving to demonstrate professional excellence with a comprehensive range of operational and administrative functional responsibilities. This reaccreditation process required the department to maintain 461 standards. The meritorious distinction points to MUPD’s note-worthy consecutive 22-year accreditation history, and the excellence reflects meeting the highest standards for the previous four years.

“Our continued accreditation through CALEA reflects our department’s commitment to serving our community through the highest level of professionalism and maintaining a campus that is not only safe but welcoming to everyone,” Accreditation Manager Sergeant Dennis Stroer said.

In addition to the CALEA Advanced Law Enforcement Accreditation Program, MUPD is also accredited through the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA) to promote student and parent confidence, as well as foster a campus community of transparency and continuous organizational improvement. MUPD has been accredited through IACLEA since 2007. IACLEA utilized the CALEA standards and has additional standards for campus law enforcement.
