University of Missouri President Mun Choi has named Senior Vice Provost Matthew Martens as interim provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs, effective Feb. 9, 2024.

Martens has served as senior vice provost since 2021 and previously served as associate provost for academic programs from 2016-2021. During his time in the Provost’s Office, Martens has been instrumental in facilitating MizzouForward, which has resulted in recruiting more than 50 premier scientists and scholars to our campus. During the pandemic, he led the university’s Academic Operations Team as it guided the university’s academic response. Martens also redesigned the academic program assessment process to be more data-driven and aligned with university accreditation requirements. Martens is currently leading MU’s Higher Learning Commission accreditation activities and preparing for the university’s next comprehensive evaluation in 2025. Martens received his doctorate from MU in educational and counseling psychology and has published more than 125 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters. While a full-time faculty member, he received consistent funding from federal agencies.

Martens follows Latha Ramchand, who has accepted the role as executive vice president and chancellor for Indiana University Indianapolis, the newly renamed Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.

"I value this institution and look forward to serving in a new capacity," Martens said. "Together, we'll build on Provost Ramchand's work as we take MU into 2024 to become an even stronger flagship, AAU, land-grant university."

A national search for provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs will begin immediately.
