At the University of Missouri, building a championship culture starts with strong leadership. For Laird Veatch, Mizzou’s director of athletics, that means empowering people, building trust and working toward a shared vision.
In this edition of “Five Questions,” Veatch shares what has shaped his approach to leadership and why he’s excited about the future of the Tigers.
What does great leadership look like to you, and how do you try to model it every day at Mizzou?
It looks like empowering a great team of talented people around me to perform at their highest capacity to achieve common goals. I try to support and encourage our people every day and keep us all aligned on our vision and values.
Who or what has influenced your leadership style the most?
I’ve been blessed with the influence of great leaders and mentors throughout my life, from my parents to coaches to bosses I have worked for across my professional career. I’ve learned much from each, but all instilled a values-based work ethic with a consistent focus on building and maintaining trusting relationships.
What have you learned about leadership from working with coaches and student-athletes at Mizzou?
I have learned the value of being open, clear and transparent with honest people who want to achieve great things together.
What part of leading Mizzou Athletics is most rewarding to you personally?
One of the many things I love about Mizzou is the genuine, hardworking people who truly care about our students and coworkers. The culture here makes leadership not only easier, but also more enjoyable and fulfilling.
What excites you the most about the future of Mizzou Athletics?
I sincerely believe we have a unique opportunity window — through the currently chaotic landscape of college athletics — to continue climbing toward consistently competing for and winning championships!
