As winter break approaches, the University of Missouri Police Department (MUPD) encourages you to plan ahead and safeguard your home and belongings while away from campus.

“We want everyone to have a safe and happy holiday season,” Officer Rachel Frakes of MUPD’s Crime Prevention Unit said. “Taking a few moments to prepare now can save you significant time and trouble later.”

Enjoy break and a happier return with these tips.

Before leaving your residence

  • Make sure doors and windows are locked.
  • Unplug devices, including computers, televisions, kitchen appliances and surge protectors.
  • Remove your valuables or secure them in a closet or locked trunk.
  • Keep vehicles secure by locking the doors, closing windows, removing valuables and parking in a well-lit area.
  • Register your property, including bicycles and electronics, with MUPD. Anything that has a serial number should be registered.

Mail and package safety

  • Track packages so you know when they’ll arrive.
  • Contact the U.S. Postal Service and place a hold on your mail if you’ll be gone for an extended period of time.
  • Have packages delivered to a parcel locker or P.O. box.
  • Request a signature confirmation for important deliveries.

Vehicle Safety and Traveling Preparations

  • Check the weather forecast and allow for extra time to get to your destination.
  • Check your battery, fluid levels and tire pressure. Pack an emergency kit that includes a flashlight, jumper cables, blankets, ice scraper and first aid kit.
  • Before traveling, let friends and family know of your plans.
  • Fill your gas tank and charge your cell phone.
  • Always wear your seatbelt.
