Mickey Slimp, executive director of the Great Plains Network based at the University of Missouri, has been appointed to The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Consumer Advisory Committee (CAC). This appointment underscores Slimp's expertise and dedication to advancing consumer interests in telecommunications and rural broadband access. It also follows his intensive work with the Deep East Texas Council of Governments recommending changes to the National Broadband Map.
The CAC, operating under the Federal Advisory Committee Act (FACA), plays a vital role in advising the FCC on a wide range of consumer protection issues in the telecommunications sector including, most recently, artificial intelligence. Slimp joins a national cohort of 28 members representing non-profit organizations, communications companies, trade associations and individual stakeholders.
Slimp has extensive experience in broadband infrastructure development, community engagement and currently is involved with high performance computing. His appointment reflects the FCC's commitment to ensuring access to telecommunications services for all Americans, particularly those in underserved rural communities.
"I am deeply honored to join the FCC Consumer Advisory Committee and contribute to its mission of advocating for consumer interests in telecommunications," Slimp said. "I look forward to collaborating with fellow members and the FCC to address key challenges and opportunities in expanding broadband access and enhancing connectivity nationwide."
