As part of its accreditation requirements, the University of Missouri Police Department has an online public comment portal available on its website. The portal is part of a new standard required by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). Feedback made through the portal will go directly to CALEA.
The CALEA four-year accreditation is considered “the gold standard in public safety,” and its program seals are reserved for public safety agencies that demonstrate compliance with strict standards and show that policies and procedures are on the cutting edge of best practices in law enforcement. In 2019, MUPD was reaccredited for the seventh time.
“Our department has a strong commitment to maintaining excellence and professionalism,” said Chief Brian Weimer of the MU police department. “We work hard to maintain the highest quality of standards among our sworn officers and welcome feedback from the community.”
MUPD has long provided an online public portal for feedback that goes directly to the MU police department. The purpose of the new public portal is to receive comments regarding agency's compliance with CALEA standards, engagement in the service community, delivery of public safety services and overall candidacy for accredited status. Comments can be made in the form of commendations or concerns.
The overall intent of the accreditation process is to provide the participating agency with information to support continuous improvement, as well as foster the pursuit of professional excellence.
MUPD is among eight university law enforcement departments in the SEC accredited by CALEA and of those, only four are accredited through both CALEA and The International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA): MUPD and those departments affiliated with University of Florida, University of Tennessee and Vanderbilt University.
