Grigory Oparin, team captain of the University of Missouri’s chess team, recently won his – and the university’s – first U.S. collegiate title.

Oparin and his teammates competed in the 2021 U.S. Online Collegiate Rapid and Blitz Championships, the first collegiate national championships of the season. It was highly competitive, with 23 teams from all over the United States — including 22 grandmasters fighting for the titles.

“I am happy that all the hard work our team has done lately is paying off,” Oparin said. “It is a great feeling to bring the first national chess title to Mizzou. We will continue to improve, and I am looking forward to competing in the upcoming events.”

The Mizzou Chess team is competing in the Collegiate Chess League, which runs through November 21.
