At the University of Missouri, every fact adds up to something greater — the story of who we are.
Behind every number (or acre, dining transaction or academic building) is an anecdote that captures the spirit of Mizzou. We’re a big, bold, world-class research university in the heart of Missouri on a campus brimming with beauty, energy and possibility.
But hey, this is the Show Me State — so we’ll let the numbers speak for themselves.

Mizzou isn’t just the state’s flagship, land-grant public university and a proud member of the prestigious Association of American Universities, it’s a whole lot of space to dream big. We’re talking 7,116,753 square feet of academic buildings. That’s seven million-plus square feet of possibility where Tigers learn, research, innovate and change the world.

A walk across campus is literally a walk through the Mizzou Botanic Garden. Since 1999, the entire university grounds have doubled as a certified botanic garden, transforming 1,252 acres — 750 of them maintained by Mizzou’s Landscape Services — into a living, breathing learning lab. Whether you’re hurrying to class or exploring campus for the first time, you’re walking through one of Mizzou’s greatest treasures.
2,000
Mizzou students give back in a big way. Tigers rack up an average of 2,000 service hours a year, making a real difference in the greater community. Students give back through events such as Caring for Columbia, Mizzou’s largest student-led day of service, during which hundreds of Tigers roll up their sleeves at sites all over the city, and Mizzou’s Homecoming Blood Drive, the largest student-run blood drive in the nation. Many student organizations, sororities and fraternities make service a core part of what they do.

During its first year, MU Health Care’s new Children’s Hospital provided specialized care for more than 4,000 kids, supported nearly 500 newborns in the NICU and welcomed more than 2,600 babies into the world — all wrapped in the care and compassion of its amazing team.

Don’t forget to stop and smell the flowers! Seriously, there are a lot of them on campus. Mizzou boasts 21 specialty flower beds and more than 70 plant containers. Add in the 5,600 trees dotting the grounds, and a simple stroll across campus turns into a scenic tour.

Each year, more than 28,000 rounds of golf tee off at Mizzou’s A.L. Gustin Golf Course, a public course just west of Memorial Stadium on Stadium Boulevard. This 18-hole gem is more than a golfer’s paradise, it’s a black, gold and green dream, celebrated for its excellence in wildlife habitat management, water conservation and eco-friendly turf care.

There are even creatively converted spaces for community-style doubles.

The MU Research Reactor is the most powerful university research reactor in the country, operating at 10 megawatts. It’s where brilliant scientists team up with industry partners to spark discoveries and create game-changing products, including lifesaving radiopharmaceuticals. In fact, radioisotopes produced at MURR helped treat nearly 500,000 cancer patients last year alone. That’s Tiger innovation making a world of difference.

Lace up your sneakers and hit the 6.5 miles of scenic trails winding through Mizzou’s campus. The “tree trails” feature three charming loops: Jesse Hall Loop, where history greets you around every corner of Francis Quadrangle; Lowry Mall Loop, a leafy stroll centered on Ellis Library; and Memorial Union Loop, where limestone buildings from the early 1900s set the scene. Keep your eyes peeled for the aluminum plaques that identify the trees.

The kansas Jayhawks are the Tigers’ No. 1 rival, and this rivalry runs deep. It all kicked off on Oct. 31, 1891, when the two teams first clashed. Since then, the Border Showdown has become a battle for bragging rights, with the rivals facing off 113 times. The Tigers have roared to victory 58 times, kU has taken 54 and nine games have ended in a tie. This year, Mizzou showed who’s boss, beating the Jayhawks 42–31.

There’s nothing quite like the roar of The Zou® on game day when the stadium is packed! This season, 57,321 fans are bringing the energy — about 5,000 fewer than usual, thanks to the construction on the north concourse. But don’t worry, Tiger fans, those numbers are expected to climb again next season when the upgrades are complete. Get ready to make some noise. M-I-Z!
590
The IT Help Desk team at Mizzou might not wear capes, but they’re unsung heroes who keep campus life running smoothly. These tech-savvy Tigers resolve an average of 590 work request tickets a week, swooping in to save the day and always striving to deliver high-quality information to support teaching, learning, research and administration on campus. This crew makes sure life at Mizzou stays glitch-free, one ticket at a time.

Agriculture is a big deal in Missouri — and Mizzou digs in. The university tends more than 14,500 acres of research farms across the state. One standout is the 591-acre Bradford Research Farm, just 11 miles east of campus. It’s home to the largest concentration of research plots in crops, soils and related disciplines in the state.

No one pumps the crowd like Marching Mizzou. Known as the “Big M of the Midwest,” this group of dedicated students has grown over its 140-year history to a capacity 350 members. These Tigers are proud to represent Mizzou. From rocking crowds in Dublin, Ireland, to strutting down the streets of New York in the 96th Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, Marching Mizzou proves that when it comes to school spirit, they march to the beat of their own drum.
