Senior textile and apparel management student Sydney Brockman recently represented the University of Missouri at U of New York Fashion Week. The program offers students an exclusive behind-the-scenes experience inside the fashion industry.

Visiting Champion’s headquarters and flagship store
Here, Brockman visited with designers at Champion to learn more about their design process and create custom embroidered Champion gear.
Customizing Champion clothing is nothing new to Brockman – she recently collaborated with Champion and fellow Textile and Apparel Management major Addison Jett to create a ‘90s inspired vintage sweatshirt. Their sweatshirt design was the class winner and is even available for purchase at The Mizzou Store.
Attending the Badgley Mischka runway show
This show presented a collection of classic evening attire. Brockman said she especially enjoyed seeing the glitter suits it featured. “The collection was beautiful and elegant. I want to be a designer in the future and hopefully one day have a fashion runway show of my own,” she said.
Going backstage
Brockman then attended the NYFW Backstage experience where she got an inside look at the grind and glamour of the fashion industry. She also met industry professionals and designers, including twin brothers Bruce and Glen Proctor.
Returning to the Zou
After a whirlwind weekend, it was time to head back to Columbia. Brockman said the experience was “phenomenal” and is grateful to the U of NYFW program and MU for making it possible.
“This trip was an amazing experience, and I even landed a job interview because of it,” she said. “It was extremely inspiring and a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I left as confident as ever that there is a place for me in this industry.”
