Streetwear is more than just fashion, it’s a lifestyle. After identifying a need for more positive messaging in streetwear — a style defined by casual, comfortable clothing with bold graphic designs — University of Missouri senior Trey Scott turned his passion for creativity into his own label.
What began as a high school project has since transformed into Johnson and Scott: a streetwear company that champions community, collaborates with local talent and spreads positivity through every design. And Mizzou helped Scott take his business idea from a dream into reality.
Specifically, Mizzou’s Entrepreneur Quest program — designed to help students develop their entrepreneurial skills and turn their concepts into viable ventures — provided Scott with hands-on training and insights around legal, financial and scaling issues. His involvement with Mizzou CEO, a student organization for entrepreneurs, fueled his creativity. And a chance connection helped him launch his brand in The Mizzou Store, providing him with a public platform for his products.
Now, as Scott graduates this December with a degree in textile and apparel management from Mizzou’s College of Arts and Science, he’s ready to launch a career in fashion in Kansas City. His ultimate goal? To lead Johnson and Scott full time and continue to use fashion to spread positivity to the world.
Read on for a Q&A with Scott about his Mizzou experience.
How did you take advantage of hands-on learning opportunities on campus?
I took advantage of hands-on learning opportunities on campus by attending entrepreneurship events, career fairs, student showcases and alumni gatherings. These experiences allowed me to network with professionals, present my work, gain industry insights and connect with alumni for guidance. Each opportunity helped me develop practical skills and build a strong foundation for my career.
For example, through a diverse array of activities with the Entrepreneur Quest competition, I gained insights from various lessons and speakers on legal matters, value propositions, stage presence, financials, scaling and more. Each aspect of the competition brought thought-provoking and challenging questions that pushed me to evaluate my business from multiple angles. This immersive experience enhanced my understanding and strategic approach, driving my journey toward success.
How has Mizzou helped you achieve your goals?
Mizzou has been an incredible asset in helping me achieve my goals. The university provides countless opportunities to learn and grow, such as clubs, guest speakers and events — all of which have enriched my experience. One pivotal moment came through my involvement in a campus club that led to a connection with The Mizzou Store which led to a selection of Johnson and Scott products being featured there. That has been a huge boost toward my goal of building brand awareness. Mizzou’s supportive environment and the resources it offers have been instrumental in turning my aspirations into tangible achievements.
What’s your favorite Mizzou memory?
My favorite Mizzou memory was hosting my brand launch event at The Mizzou Store. Having a rack of my clothing displayed right at the entrance and interacting directly with people interested in my work was an incredible experience. It was a huge milestone for my business and personally, as it showed how much the Mizzou community believes in and supports us.
Why are you proud to be a Tiger?
I’m proud to be a Tiger because it means being part of a supportive and driven community that pushes you to succeed. At Mizzou, there’s a strong sense of pride in not only academic and professional achievements but also in the way we uplift each other. From collaborating with fellow students to receiving guidance from advisors and alumni, the Mizzou community fosters a culture of connection and growth. Being a Tiger means having access to a network of people who genuinely care about each other’s success, making it easier to chase your goals and turn dreams into reality.
What would you tell someone who’s interested in coming to Mizzou?
I would tell someone interested in coming to Mizzou that it's a place full of opportunities for anyone's interests. Whether you’re focused on academics, entrepreneurship or community involvement, there’s always something to get involved in. The Mizzou community is incredibly supportive, with a strong sense of pride in helping each other succeed.
