Mizzou's iconic Memorial Union, located at Hitt Street and University Avenue across from Lowry Mall, was erected beginning in 1920 in honor of the 117 MU students who died while serving in the Armed Forces during World War I. The original Gothic tower, with the names of fallen Mizzou World War I veterans etched in the archway, was competed in 1926. The university later added the north wing in 1952, A.P. Green Chapel in 1959 and the south wing in 1963. Before the construction of Brady Commons in 1963, the building served as the university's only student union.
Memorial Union now houses the Veterans Center, the Disability Center and the International Center along with event spaces, study nooks and eateries. Every year during Veterans Week, Mizzou hosts a wreath-laying ceremony there in honor of Tigers veterans who have died in war.
