On Aug. 15, the University of Missouri’s Division of Inclusion, Diversity and Equity STEM Cubs program received the 2022 Inspiring Programs in STEM Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the largest and oldest diversity and inclusion publication in higher education.
The Inspiring Programs in STEM Award honors colleges and universities that encourage and assist students from underrepresented groups to enter the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). MU’s popular day camp for elementary school students will be featured, along with 78 other recipients, in the September 2022 issue of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine.
“The Division of Inclusion, Diversity and Equity is proud that STEM Cubs and STEM Cubs @Home have been recognized for their role in providing early educational access to young Missourians,” said Maurice Gipson, vice chancellor of inclusion, diversity and equity. “With the number of STEM jobs increasing exponentially, we want to remain at the forefront in preparing future leaders.”
Inspiring Programs in STEM Award winners were selected by INSIGHT Into Diversity based on efforts to inspire and encourage a new generation of young people to consider careers in STEM through mentoring, teaching, research and successful programs and initiatives.
“Since 2017 STEM Cubs for elementary school-aged students has been a critical collaboration among the Division of Inclusion, Diversity and Equity, the College of Education and Human Development and the College of Engineering that continues to evolve,” said Natashua Davis, associate vice chancellor for access and leadership development. “We truly look forward to growing our efforts of exposing STEM education and careers to all students.”
MU has hosted STEM Cub camps for six years, with a break in 2020 due to the pandemic. The program allows K–5 students from backgrounds historically underrepresented in STEM fields to ignite their imaginations by exploring science, technology, engineering and mathematics with hands-on activities.
INSIGHT Into Diversity selected MU because of the university’s continued commitment to engage students from underrepresented backgrounds.
“We know that many STEM programs are not always recognized for their success, dedication and mentorship for underrepresented students,” says Lenore Pearlstein, owner and publisher of INSIGHT Into Diversity. “We want to honor the schools and organizations that have created programs that inspire and encourage young people who may currently be in or are interested in a future career in STEM.”
The fall STEM Cubs & STEM Cubs Middle Connections will be held Saturday, Oct. 29, 2022. Registration for both programs will open in early September. To receive registration updates via e-mail, click here.
